How to get Whiskers the Rat
During Children's Week, characters level 10 or higher can begin the faction orphan quest line from Orphan Matron Nightingale in Stormwind or Orphan Matron Battlewail in Orgrimmar. Complete the orphan's full sightseeing route and finish A Warden of the Alliance or A Warden of the Horde. Choose Rat Cage to receive Whiskers the Rat. Rat Cage binds when picked up, so the pet cannot be traded to another collector.
Start Children's Week at your faction orphanage
Alliance characters begin with Orphan Matron Nightingale in Stormwind and receive the Human Orphan Whistle. Horde characters begin with Orphan Matron Battlewail in Orgrimmar and receive the Orcish Orphan Whistle.
The original Vanilla quest line requires level 10. Use the whistle to summon your orphan for each required sightseeing stop.
Complete the original Vanilla orphan route
Alliance players take their orphan to the Westfall lighthouse, the Bough of the Eternals in Darnassus, and the Stonewrought Dam. Horde players visit the Lordaeron throne room, Mor'shan Rampart, and the Ratchet docks.
Complete Jaina's Autograph for Alliance or Cairne's Hoofprint for Horde, then You Scream, I Scream..., before returning to the orphanage for the final Warden quest.
Choose Rat Cage for Whiskers
A Warden of the Alliance and A Warden of the Horde share the same original reward list. Rat Cage summons Whiskers the Rat, Turtle Box gives Speedy, Piglet's Collar gives Mr. Wiggles, and Curmudgeon's Payoff is the 5-gold alternative.
The final quest grants one reward choice, so selecting Whiskers uses that completion's Children's Week reward.
Whiskers has a distinctive play-dead behavior
The Pet Journal describes Whiskers as a clever tactician who feigns death to fool predators and bill collectors.
Historical Classic comments also report an occasional animation where he jumps and falls onto his back as if dead, matching that characterization.
Rat Cage is bind on pickup
Rat Cage is unique and binds when picked up.
There is no Auction House or cross-faction trade route for the permanent companion.
A clever tactician, Whiskers will feign death to fool predators and bill collectors.
